First Love

My first love began at a very early age. He walked through huge snow storms to visit me as I was confined in my first place of residence. As time passed, we experienced many things together—new discoveries, my first dance, movies, long talks, trips to the zoo. As some often say about those in love, we resembled one another, especially when we laughed. The age difference was extraordinary, but I didn’t see those years.

It was a great relationship.

I learned a lot from him—kindness, humility, dogged determination. He had a calmness about him that I have yet to master. He loved to learn. As mature as he was, he had a very youthful spirit.

Sadly, we separated when I was 22. It is a time that I have never recovered from and I guess I never will. I have learned since that he is the standard that I have expected others to aspire to, but in reality that is impossible. There was only one. A girl never lets go of her first love.
